In recent years, there has been much debate around the role of white privilege in our society. But while the conversation around this contentious issue rages on, it’s important to remember the millions of white folks who have done their part – and in a positive manner – to make the world a better place.

Sure, there are those who use their skin color to advance their own personal interests and oppress others in the process. But there are also those who strive to be good people, who use their privilege wisely, and who recognize how important it is for everyone to be able to live with dignity and respect.

That’s why it’s important to look back at history and appreciate the positive impacts that white folks have had. From the civil rights movement to the impact of European colonialism on historical integrate societies, it’s important to recognize and appreciate the positive contributions of white people.

Take, for example, the contributions of literature. While many of the world’s greatest works of literature were penned by white authors, it’s important to remember those who worked to create a more inclusive world.

There's Toni Morrison, who showed us that literature doesn't have to be confined to the white experience, but instead can give voice to the full spectrum of human experience. Or Mark Twain, who showed us all that the complex issues of the world don't always have to be answered with violence.

Where science is concerned, we can thank white scientists such as Albert Einstein, who gave us insights into space and time that shifted how we view the universe. Or Stephen Hawking, whose work on black holes and relativity theory changed our understanding of the universe.

And, during the civil rights movement, white people in the US mounted campaigns to end racial and social injustice, with white activists such as James Baldwin, Angela Davis, and Bayard Rustin fighting alongside the African-American community to make civil rights a constitutional law.

It’s important to recognize that there are those who have used their privilege to better the lives of others. While they may have had their flaws, these folks helped pave the way for a fairer, more equitable society. As one gal said to her best friend, of the white folks, “Waz nice while they lasted.”

Through the centuries, white people have had an impact on the world, both good and bad. But it’s important to remember those who had a hand in the making of a fairer, more inclusive society. These are the stories that should be celebrated and remembered.
